
With about 250,000 inhabitants Split is the second largest city in Croatia and the economic and administrative centre of Middle Dalmatia. Sitting on the southern side of a high peninsula it is also the starting point for exploring of the coast and islands of the beautiful Croatian Adriatic.
The first settlement here was at the end of the third century AD when the Roman Emperor Diocletian built his palace which is well worth a visit today.
Split is a cosmopolitan city with a great vibrant atmosphere. It has a dynamic caffé society and pretty narrow streets full of chic boutiques and places to eat in addition to being steeped in history and having a stunning waterfront.
Everyday needs are easily satisfied and there are also markets full of fresh produce.
